The riding on this trip is truly special as many of these trails are ancient paths built by the Incas over 500 years ago. The trails are generally long sections of flowy singletrack, with segments of steep and rocky features, and quite o few areas where we ride stairs. Some areas can have exposure.
Most of the trails start at high elevation and drain down to the valley. The elevation on this trip ranges from 7972 feet up to 13,451 feet.
How much riding will we do each day?
There are 6 days of shuttle access riding on this trip. Although this is predominantly gravity-fed, there is some climbing from time to time. Expect to be biking for 4-6 hours each day with 2-3 hours of driving time in shuttles.
Note: The rides on this trip are at high elevation, ranging from 9000-15,000 feet. Be prepare to stay hydrated and manage your energy at altitude.
Do I have the skills for this trip?
The following outlines our guidelines for the fitness and skill required to enjoy this specific trip.

What do I do about the high altitude on this trip?
This entire trip takes place at high altitude, above 8000ft (2400m). Most of the riding will take place above 10,000ft (3000m) with some trails starting above 13,000-14,000ft (3900-4300m). It is highly recommended that you educate yourself on the effects of high altitude and prepare yourself for travel.
Many people will get a prescription for medications such as acetazolamide (common brand name Diamox) to help prevent the effects of altitude. However, this option may/may not be necessary or possible for all people and can cause side effects. Speak with your doctor to ensure you are in proper physical shape to spend 9 days at altitude and get advice about whether you should get a prescription for a medication such as Diamox.
If you live at low elevation, consider arriving 1-2 days early to give your body time to adjust to the elevation. There is an option to add extra hotel nights onto your stay during the booking process.
Note: It is very important that you arrive on this trip hydrated and you work to stay hydrated each day you are traveling. Staying hydrated may help prevent altitude sickness.
What should I wear for riding in Peru?
Our Peru adventures are located in the heart of the Sacred Valley in the Andes mountains. In general during this time of year, you can expect warm and sunny days (60-70F) with cool nights (35-45F).
This region of Peru is very mountainous terrain and changing weather is a daily factor. Wind, rain and thunderstorms could occur on any given day. All of the rides in this itinerary also take place at high elevation (9,500-15,000 ft) so be prepared for changing weather and cold temperatures during rides.
Plan to bring extra layers both for warmth and to keep you dry on any given day. You’ll also want warm layers for post ride travel back to the hotel and comfortable clothes to lounge in and keep you warm at night.
Do I need a hydration pack for this trip?
Yes, we will be riding for many hours each day (4-6 hours). We recommend all riders should be prepared to carry 2-3L of water on them each day.
Note: The tap water in Peru is not suitable for drinking. We will have purified drinking water provided in the van for the group each day. Purified water is also readily available at each hotel.
I’ve never travelled with my bike. Will there be someone available to help me assemble my bike?
Our guides will be there to help you build your bike at the start of the trip and pack it up at the end. We will have tools available and we’re very experienced in assembling and packing bikes. We’ll gladly give you tips and help you out during the process.
Are there bike rentals available?
Rental options are available and include:
Full-suspension Bikes: Devinci Spartan, Marin Alpine, Scott Ransom
Flat pedals provided - Bring your shoes and pedals if you ride clipped in.
Helmets are not provided. Bring your own.
Let us know your height, weight, and bike size and we’ll get you set up.
Will there be quality snacks available?
Our crew will have some snacks available, however, it is up to each participant to provide their own personal snacks and electrolyte replacement tabs and/or chews while riding. There are local stores where these types of items can be purchased, however, it is recommended that you bring a supply of your favorite items from home as the selection can be limited and often times be very different than what you’re used to at home.
Are their gluten free, dairy free, or vegan food options available?
All of our trips can cater to most dietary needs, however, make sure you tell us in advance so our team can be properly prepared. We will provide you with forms to fill out prior to travel that will allow you the opportunity to notify us of any dietary needs or allergies.

How does tipping work in Peru?
Although tipping is completely up to your discretion, it is customary to provide gratuity for the guides and drivers on your trip. A typical gratuity for your expert mountain bike guides is 5-10% of your trip cost per person and 2-5% for drivers. This may be given to the lead guide on your trip or to each person individually.
